must focus…
The next few days, I’m going to throw myself into finishing unpacking, organizing closets, and hopefully getting started on painting in our new house. We’ve been here a month and there’s still tons of boxes of books in the basement, the kids toys are completly unorganized in the playroom, and none of the bedrooms have been painted so they’re still covered in depressing wood paneling. So here’s the goals, in order:
1- organize playroom closet, put in shelves and organize toys into rubbermade tubs that are labeled
2- unpack all books and put on shelves in basement
3- organize the storage room in the basement a bit so all our long-term storage stuff is securly in there, then put the door back on the hinges so I don’t have to see it
4- start painting!
Sub-list, the order to paint:
a- my exercise/sewing room. it would be nice to do this one, since its a small room that won’t take long to finish and will give me a boost to have a room done quickly. plus, I’d enjoy my workouts even more! I’m using light purple in there. This is also the room that’s going to be our guest room, once we get a sleeper sofa. Since we have several guests coming to visit this fall I need to get on the ball with the room.
b- master bedroom. David and I both HATE wood panelling, and its frankly depressing to wake up in a room with it. we have a calming light green to paint the walls, and it will brighten up the room immensely, making it feel more spacious.
c- downstairs bathroom. its a super-creepy and very ugly bathroom, hopefully painting it a tropical blue-green will cheer it up and make it not quite so unappealing. plus, if I alternate painting an upstairs room with a downstairs room, it’ll give time for paint fumes to dissapait.
d- Ellie’s bedroom. We have a sweet shade of light purple to paint her room, and it will be so cute when we’re done. I think I want to get some stencils or wall-stickers to put some butterflies and flowers up.
e- the upstairs bathroom. the wallpaper in there is not unattractive, but its not our taste. This bathroom will also be a tropical blue-green – it’ll be our Carribean beach bathroom!
After I finish all of this I’ll be able to start on the kid’s quilts. I want to make them each a quilt for their new rooms. I’m going to do a train-themed quilt in primary colors for Killy (I’m thinking red, yellow, and blue), and a butterfly themed quilt in lilac and yellow for Ellie. I’ll do matching curtains for their rooms, too, and try to find some matching rugs. I made baby quilts for them both, and I need to find somewhere to display those, too. I haven’t made any full-sized quilts since before I had kids, and I haven’t done any quilting since I was pregnant with Ellie. It will be sooo nice to get back into it. What I really love about quilting is designing the layout of the quilt, picking the fabrics, and making them truly unique and special. These will be my ninth and tenth quilts that I’ve made, I think. I need to do one for me and David’s bed, too – but I’m a bit intimidated with the thought of making a King sized quilt. After getting back into it with the kid’s quilts, though, I think I’ll be ready. Our duvet is in sorry shape, though, so it needs to be done. I guess I’ll do a quilted duvet cover rather than a true quilt, though. Or maybe I’ll just use our down comforter as the stuffing for the quilt. I’ll have to ponder this…
