yay, garden!
So, I’m dissapointed because I don’t have any pictures of my completed garden because it was dark when I finished it tonight! I worked my butt off the last few days, and now its all done. It was quite an ordeal, because (as I’ve whined about already) I had to remove all the sod from the plot because there hadn’t been a garden here in years. My original plan was to have a 15×25 foot plot, but I scaled back to about 15×15. Tonight I planted: one row yellow sweet corn, 3 Celebrity tomatoes, 4 Mr. Stripey tomatoes, 3 Rutgers tomatoes, 4 jalepeno peppers, 4 green bell peppers, 4 golden bell peppers, 6 cucumbers, 1 watermelon, 1 eggplant, 2 zucchini, 2 yellow squash, 2 butternut squash, 2 broccoli, 2 cauliflower, and the last row is divided evenly between mustard greens, mixed salad greens, and kale. To the side of the garden I did a small teepee of pole beans and a large teepee of sugar snap peas, but I’m not sure how those will turn out since they’re not in de-sodded tilled earth. I also have a little planter on the patio with dill, chives, and sweet basil. (And don’t forget that in front of our house there’s the HUGE stone flower bed in which I planted 40 begonias, 2 geraniums, and 2 petunias earlier this week.) Wow – I’m tired all over again just typing all that out!
So, this was the garden plot before I started on it:

Here it was after I de-sodded it:

And, here is the tilling (thanks to my uncle!):

And, here’s the kids playing in it, and then helping me plant the corn:

Dad asked me if I’d just been rolling Ellie around in the dirt all afternoon, but I swore to him I hadn’t. She’s started the annoying “game” of running toward the road and I have to run and grab her, and I had my gardening gloves on all afternoon so every time I picked her up she got dirtier. Plus, she was helping me plant and dig! My children have suddenly morphed into little country kids, they run barefoot all the time and stay permanently filthy. When we lived in Kansas, they took a nighttime bath 2-3 times a week. Since we moved here its been every night!
