frustration!!!

So, I haven’t posted this week because I’ve been obsessed with finishing the baby’s quilt. All I have left is the actual quilting because its all sewn together, but I ran out of thread at 9:45pm – JoAnne’s closed at 9pm, and they’re the only place around here that carries the really good thread (Walmart only has cheap thread). ARGH! The good news is that it should only take me about 45 minutes to finish it once I have the thread tomorrow, and it looks beautiful! I will post pictures as soon as I’m done with it. I used two layers of extra-loft batting, so it is really thick and cuddly, and I’m very pleased with the pattern I designed. The colors look great, and although there’s a few mistakes overall it looks wonderful.

In other news, I think Killy is on the verge of a verbal explosion. My understanding is that kids generally get to about 40 words in their vocabulary and then start doing word combinations, then their vocabulary just explodes to hundreds of words and short sentances within a few months. (If I’m wrong, I’m hoping one of the speach pathologist in the family will correct me!) Well, last week I made the “shhhh” sound and gesture to Killy and explained Daddy was on the phone. We left the room and when we came back, Killy heard David still talking on the phone and looked at me and said, “Shhh! Dada.” – it was so cute! He even held his finger up to his lips. I wasn’t sure wether or not to count that as a true word combination, though. (Later that night Erin and I were watching a movie and Killy was nursing to sleep in my arms and unlatched at looked up at me and said “shhh!” so I had to ask Erin to turn down the volume on the tv!) Then, yesterday, he wanted some of what I was eating and then when he wanted seconds he was whining and I said, “Can you say ‘More, please?’” – and he immediately signed “more” and then “please” frantically until I gave him some more. Then, a few minutes later he nursed, then stopped, and a minute later looked up at me and signed “more” and then “milk.” So I think we’re making big progress in communication! He’s also started signing “please” spontaneously when he wants something or needs help with something – I know lots of school age kids who don’t spontaneously use the word please! We’re also working on adding “thank you” to his vocabulary – he says it occasionally, but it would be nice if he learned the sign, too. It would be sooo awesome if he were a bit more verbal by the time the baby gets here so we could communicate even more effectively with him, although I know he understands most of what we say now. He follows simple directions like, “Put that back in the trash can.” and “Please go get your pacifier – its by the couch over there.” but I can’t wait for him to be able to initiate coversations and tell me what he’s thinking!

    Jen –

Yay! You’re right about verbal development–he sounds like he’s ready to start really talking up a storm soon. That’s so exciting! As a grad student in speech path, I think it’s so cool to be able to hear about his development as it happens. (hint hint, you have to keep me updated as much as you can! I want to know what he’s saying, how many words, how are his verbs, etc…) And as an aunt, of course, I’m just really, REALLY proud of him! He’s ahead of the curve, but that doesn’t surprise me at all.

And for the record, grad school is absolutely lovely. I heart grad school.

I also heart you, Killy, Dave, and your tummy! :) *hug*

    Take care!
